How to test your ideas against reality.

A flexible five-step approach for rapid learning, momentum building, and reaching your destination.

Step 1

Define your future destination.

To reach your destination, you must first have one. Clarify what your destination looks like. Write this in your notebook or favorite online tool.

Step 2

Describe your current situation.

The gap between your destination and your current situation is the problem or opportunity. This is your starting point.

Step 3

Select and run a tiny week-long experiment.

Divide large problems into smaller ones. Use the 80/20 rule to choose the most valuable experiment to test first. Keep notes on the steps you take. Your future self will thank you.

Step 4

What were the results? What did you learn?

“We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.”
—John Dewey

Step 5

What’s your next experiment?

Everything is experimentation until you reach your destination. What will you try next week?
